maedhbh-clearyDubliner Maedhbh Cleary is often the girl wearing long pants, boots and layered sweaters in a crowd of shorts and tee shirts.  Her outfits generally seem to be out of sync with the weather, but only because her body’s responses are out of sync with the weather.
In freezing temperatures, the body restricts blood flow to the lower extremities as a survival method so that it circulates around the more important internal organs.  Clearly a condition called Raynaud’s disease is where the body restricts blood flow to the extremities in much milder temperatures that aren’t life-threatening.  Raynaud’s cuts off blood to the hands and feet with even slight exposure to cold or stress.
“I have to wear really warm clothes and I cannot wear high heeled shoes because it puts pressure on my toes and they’ll go numb and this will affect my balance,” said Cleary.
High heels may be fashionable, but are significantly less attractive when displaying discolored feet and often not worth the slew of other problems they cause.  If you have any foot pain or other podiatric concerns, see Dr. Neal Mozen, DPM of Foot Health Care Associates. Dr. Mozen will provide the care that you need.
Effects of High Heels on the Feet
High heels are popular shoes among women because they are associated with femininity.  Despite their appeal, they can cause many health problems if worn too frequently.
What parts my body will be affected by high heels?

  • Ankle Joints
  • Achilles Tendon – may shorten and stiffen with prolonged wear
  • Balls of the Feet
  • Knees – heels cause the knees to bend constantly, creating stress on them
  • Back – they decrease the spine’s ability to absorb shock, which may lead to back pain.  Also, the vertebrae of the lower back may compress.

What kinds of foot problems can develop from wearing high heels?

  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Hammertoe
  • Bunions
  • Morton’s Neuroma
