Zhang Fuxing, 52 of Tangshan, in northern China’s Hebi province, is on a mission to make the heaviest shoes in China. Fuxing claims that walking on a pair of 440-pound iron shoes can cure ailments such as back pain and even hemorrhoids.
“I’ve been walking with iron shoes for seven years,” said Zhang Fuxing, before strapping two crudely-welded iron blocks to his feet. After they reached 400 kilograms (882 pounds), I felt very proud. Next spring I plan to add 50 kilograms.”
Zhang said his inspiration for creating the shoes came from pioneers. “I saw someone wearing iron shoes on TV. They said it was good for the heart and bones,” he said. Zhang was suffering from back pain “so bad that I couldn’t bend over to wash my face.” He claims that his symptoms have diminished with the use of his iron footwear, an experience which led him to share it with his customers.

Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are come factors to consider when it comes to investing in properly fitting shoes:
- Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
- Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
- Even though they may look fashionable, improperly fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
- Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity
