From Our Patients
Dear Dr. Mozen and Dr. West:
The numbers tell the story. In 2003, when the Physicians Who Care program was in its infancy, 96 physicians signed on to provide specialty care for the working poor and uninsured. Just four years later, this number has more than quadrupled. Today more than 450 St. John Health Physicians are part of this dynamic group. At the same time our physician numbers have increased, so have the needs of our communities. In 2003, Physicians Who Care touched the lives of about 30 patients. In fiscal year 2007, that number grew to nearly 1300.
And yet when all is said and done, the most important number here is “one”, and that one is you. Because that is all it takes to make the difference in the lives of people who have lost all hope for a healthy future. It is the power of one person to deliver the highest quality patient care experience every day, everywhere, for everyone. It is the power of one physician with generosity of spirit for those most in need and it is the power of one physician to give generosity of his/her time and talent with great reverence for the dignity and diversity of life.
What difference can one physician make? As part of the Physicians Who Care, your participation this year has meant that a young man with cataracts has had his sight restored, got his diabetes under control, and is now enrolled in Medicaid. For another man, an immigrant from Western Africa, the Physicians Who Care program helped him to get a much-needed hip replacement. Not only did this patient get expert medical care, his PWC doctor also happened to speak fluent French, the mother tongue of the patient. It is stories like these that so vividly demonstrate the importance of Physicians Who Care.
On behalf of our Board Members and all the patient’s whose lives you have touched, it is an honor and privilege to express my deepest gratitude for your service in this vital program. Thank you for helping to make St. John Health a mainstay of compassionate care and advocacy for all who need health care. We couldn’t do this work without you.
Wishing you continued success in all that you do.
Sincerely,
Elliot Joseph
President and Chief Executive Officer St. John Health Detroit, MI
I just wanted to drop you a line and thank you and your staff; in the office and at the hospital, for making my bunion surgery a pleasant experience. Well, as pleasant as any surgery can be.
I have had these bunions for about 15 years. My fear of having someone cut into my feet was terrifying to me. It was so bad that I had to start cutting my shoes on the side to even be able to wear shoes. Even then the pain was almost unbearable. I had both my feet done last year (one at a time) and it was nothing tike what I feared it would be.
I am convinced that your postoperative instructions were the key to my healing. After I had one foot done, I had no more fear. If it had been a bad experience, I probably would have never done the other foot.
I have already handed out a couple of you cards to friends with high recommendations. Thanks again and see you for my one year checkup.
Sincerely,
Maureen Waller
I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you and your staff. Your kindness, dedication and professionalism are something to be proud of in this day and age.
The foot problem I was experiencing, not just the bunion but, the cist that was attached to it, was continually growing more painful every day. I had great apprehension about surgery because I had heard of the horror stories about foot surgery and I thought that living with the pain was better than having the surgery done on my foot. But, when I couldn't wear a pair of shoes for twenty minutes without having pain I decided to have the surgery done.
I have to say that my foot now is absolutely pain free and beautiful! Yes, the first day or two was very uncomfortable, even somewhat painful and I had to follow the rules after the surgery for a time. But, it was all worth it because you did a fantastic job of giving me back the ability to walk without the pain that I had everyday.
Now I can take my dog for a walk, spend the day walling at the mall, wear my favorite shoes (even my heels!), without any pain!
Any one that needs any type of foot care or surgery done I would recommend them to you unconditionally.
Again, my greatest appreciation to you and your staff you are all first class.
Sincerely,
Linda Whitlow
It all started with Jessie when I called mid afternoon to see if I could see Dr Mozen the same day. Such a nice lady showed concern and willing to try to help me and pleasant over the phone. I was shocked when Jessie came back with a time to be there. When I got to the office I was greeted by happy, upbeat people everywhere, with a lot of "care for others". Dr Mozen was amazing. Then the doctor and 3 of his brain trust stayed over to try and get me straight on my appointments for the following days and still remained nice and helpful and fun to be with. I have been in "a lot" of offices and I have never seen such a great group of people -Team - ever. And I can do is simply say THANK YOU.

Thank you for your pledge to the campaign for St. John Providence Park Hospital. Such generous charitable support is helping provide important resources to plan and build this new hospital for the Novi area community. I look forward to continuing to work together o help make the physician's campaign a success.
You will be pleased to know that construction is right on schedule for the July 2008 opening. The six floors of steel are fully erected and the exterior is in the process of being enclosed, which will enable interior work to continue trough the winter. The building is rapidly taking shape, giving us a glimpse of how spectacular the new hospital will be.
Again, thank you for this support and for all your efforts on behalf of establishing St. John Providence Park Hospital.
Sincerely
Ida L. Warshay
Senior Development Officer Providence Health Foundation
A year ago no one could have told me that I would have still been pain free and enjoying life the way I used to before my procedure.
Just over three years ago, I started to experience shape pains in my heel, in the beginning it just happened in the morning and it would go away after a few minutes. Gradually the pain started to happen during Lie day too. By the time I came to see you my arch felt like it was pulled so tight and my heel hurt so bad I could hardly walk. I stopped exercising, I stopped taking walks, I stopped doing anything that would require me to be on my feet for an extended period of time.
First of all I would like to thank you and your entire staff for being so understanding of my pain and so patient with time during my visits. After my initial visit and diagnosis I was given a cortisone shot in my heel and fitted for inserts. I felt immediate relief from the shot and diligently wore my inserts, however, after a few short months the pain returned and I received a second injection. It was at this time that you suggested that
surgery might be our only option if the injection did not relieve my pain this time. Again a few months went by and I returned, frustrated and tired of feeling miserable. After a lengthy discussion of my options. and my fear of surgery because of my diabetes, we opted for physical therapy. This helped for the day of therapy but not for any extended period of time. Back to the office for more consultation and the introduction of a new procedure called OSSATRON or "Shockwave Treatment for Heel Pain"'!!The treatment was ideal for me because of my diabetes and fear of not healing properly. Insurance approval was a must because of the expense. You and your staff bent over backwards trying to get his approval for me and it worked!
This procedure was done in an out patient facility and was over in a few hours from the time I arrived to the time I left. After check in I was visited by a number of staff who took my vitals, checked my blood, questioned my medical history and most important took time to explain the entire procedure to me. I was hooked up to an IV and taken to the operating room where I was shown the OSSATRON machine and again explained in detail the procedure. I was slowly put to sleep and woke up with a wrapped foot that was very numb. Because of the numbness I had a hard time walking to the car but I was assured that all the numbness would go away within 24 hours. I was also told that I might experience pain in my heel for a few weeks but that would also go away. The next morning I work up with no numbness and PAIN FREE! I was ecstatic and ready to take on anything. -My husband kept reminding me to go slow --- "Its just the first day".
It has been that ways everyday for the last year. I have no heel pain ... I have no arch pain
I1 have my life back. we travel again, take long walks again and I can exercise again.
THANK YOU for taking the time to explore this procedure for me, for listening to me about my fear of surgery and for being a constant support during the year we were trying to fix this problem.
I have sent many friends to you (as I'm sure you know). I have told my other doctors about you and your wonderful staff and I will continue to sing your praises! !'
God Bless All Of You!
Sincerely,
Judy Gargaro

Foot Health Care Thank you!
This would not have been possible without you!
With gratitude,

What can I say that the other patients haven't already said? Your office staff is the best, from Sonja up front to the girls in back who I have enjoyed sharing my stories with. They all were very professional and made me feel very good on every visit. I will miss coming in the office, I mean how many people go to Dr's of aces with smile son their faces? Dr I will see you when I get the other foot done.
PS I guess I have been feeling the screw now that I know where it is at, gets worse you'll see me sooner.
Fondly,
Charlotte Price

I would like to express my gratitude for all the wonderful care you have shown to both me and my patients. I especially would like to thank you, Dr. Mozen, for going above and beyond in treating my chronic foot pain – most recently with the orthotripsy. I am hopeful for pain free days ahead and a return to normal activities again. Your staff has always been pleasant, professional and caring – I know this first hand as well as from feedback from my patients. You all seem to enjoy what you are doing and it shows! Wishing you a wonderful 2004!
Ron
First of all, I would like to thank you and your staff for making my foot surgery a relaxing and stress-free experience. Secondly, I would like to address your patients who are as nervous as I was before I had the surgery. The process of having any kind of surgery done can be very nerve wrecking. I for one can testify to that. Before I had the procedure done, I had many a person tell me how painful the surgery was going to be and that I would be off of work for six weeks. My advice to you, if you are considering having foot surgery done, is don’t listen to these horror stores. Thanks to Dr. Mozen and his step-by-step explanation of the process, he put my mind at ease, and I stopped listening to other people trying to scare the socks off of me. The whole procedure was done at a wonderful facility in Southfield, and the staff was just as calming as Dr. Mozen’s crew. I was in and out of there within four hours, my husband drove me home and there I lay in bed for three straight days with my foot elevated, WITHOUT any pain, and may I add, I took no pain medication. I had surgery on Thursday and was back to work the following Wednesday. To this day I still never experienced any pain. I can only urge those of you who are considering bunion surgery not to wait a long period of time to have this done. The longer you wait the more stress you will cause yourself and you are only doing more damage to your foot. I followed my doctor’s instructions to the tee and I am bunion and pain free.

On July 18, 2003, at 8 am, I had a bunionectomy at Providence Surgical Center. Dr. Jeffrey Szczepanski performed the surgery. This may have been a small surgery for some, but for me it was a very anxious time as I have only had one other surgery and that was nearly 30 years ago. I wanted to comment on the surgical center and the physician. The nurses, nurse anesthetist, two resident physicians, and all of the other staff at the surgical center who prepared me for surgery were outstanding. They were thorough, conscientious and concerned for my safety and welfare. I was treated as an individual, not as just another patient. I want to commend all the staff who were on duty that morning for giving me a feeling of well-being and care. I can’t say enough good things about them. Dr. Szczepanski was just as outstanding. He performed the surgery in such a manner that I not only didn’t have any swelling, I didn’t have any pain, and still don’t. It’s almost embarrassing to have surgery of any kind and have no pain. As a diabetic, I was also very concerned about infection but once I got a look at the surgical site, I was amazed at the cleanliness and lack of bruising. I have already referred Dr. Szczepanski to a family member and will do so again with confidence and sincerity. Thank you for a wonderful surgical experience.

As you know, I have had severe heel pain for approximately 2 ½ years. I had the shock wave treatment performed in your office 6 weeks ago and am now 100% pain free. Thank you so much for providing this treatment for me. If any of your patients should have any questions regarding shock wave treatment, please feel free to have them contact me.

I apologize for the delay, but I did want to thank you for your excellent care of our son Patrick. He and his father were fishing in Canada when he had his “accident”. I thank you for the phone call and the letter: truly something that doesn’t happen very often these days. Patrick was able to enjoy a nice seat in “business” class because of his injury. He had no trouble while walking & biking around Germany and walking in Amsterdam! He has now returned to Colorado to work. Thank you. Your name is in my address book for the next time!

I was referred to Dr. Mozen by one of his patients. I was very reluctant about the visit because of a bad experience I had with another Podiatrist thirteen years ago, but because of the faith I have in the person who recommended me, I decided to visit Dr. Mozen's office.
During my first visit, Dr. Mozen diagnosed that there were bunions on both of my feet. Treatment during that visit was to get injections to help relieve some of the pain that I was experiencing.
Dr. Mozen, assured me that the treatments would not be painful, so putting my trust in Dr. Mozen, I am very happy to say there was no pain.
Dr. Mozen performed surgery on one of my feet on 10/06/1993. I am very happy to say I am so pleased with the results, that I am now preparing to have surgery on the other foot.
Dr. Mozen is the best, "I love him". He has the best bedside manners I have ever seen, his staff is very pleasant, and the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. You are very comfortable, and you are made to feel like you are part of one big happy family.
I plan to always keep in touch with these wonderful people.
If all physicians and their saff would learn to put their patient's first by going that extra step, the medical profession would have more happy people.
Thank you Dr. Mozen and your wonderful staff for being the people you are.
A very happy patient.
Charlotte
Thank you so much for your great care and concern during my recent foot surgery. It's nice to know that you care. I really appreciate the call and rose, they both made me feel better and special.
Too bad all doctors and staff aren't as great as you! At this rate I'll be trying to figure out another foot ailment just to come back to see you all!
Thanks again!
Beth
I wanted to take a moment to thank you and the staff of Foot Healthcare Associates. Often times, simple acts of kindness are taken for granted and fall unnoticed through the cracks. These past few months have been tiresome and stressful - not only for 'John' but for myself as well - and I know that were it not for your kindness and expertise as well as the courteous efficiancy of the staff we would not have made it through this far with our collective sanity.
Pleased as I have been thus far, however, my main reason for composing this letter was to express my gratitude to you on a personal level.
Throughout this ordeal, you have addressed all my questions and concerns regarding my husband's condition and subsequent surgeries with patience and clarity. It has been my unfortunate experience to encounter more than one physician in the past who did not find it worth his time to extend this simple courtesy, perhaps believing such worries did not warrant the extra time or effort to address. Your willingness to listen more than effectively conveys your compassion and dedication to your patients, and further strengthens the doctor-patient relationship - crucial on so many levels - with trust and understanding.
There are many professionals who would better themselves to realize that being a doctor is more than just a spattering of letters after one's name, a diploma on a wall, or a skill with a scalpel. A doctor's job requires more than just an examination of the broken body. A tru physician must also embrace the role of healer, and acknowledge the human frailty of his patient. He is driven not by ego, financial gain or reputation, but rather with the best interests of his patient at heart. The most skilled and talented physicians can make the poorest doctors if they allow themselves to lose sight of the human element - the will and desire to heal and help others - that brought them into the field of medicine to begin with.
You are a true credit to your office, your profession and your field. There are many who could better themselves by taking a lesson from the fine example that you set each day.
Speaking as an individual who has been fortunate enough to benefit from your skills, I thank you.
With warm regards,
Octavia
Thank you so much for your wonderful care. I never would have thought pieces of plastic in my shoes could make such a difference. The orthotics are wonderful - no more pain! You are a very caring, generous man.
Thank you,
Brenda
Dr. Mozen, I am writing this letter to express how delighted I am with the results of my two surgical procedures performed by you in 2001 and 2002.
I'm sure you realize and patients have expressed to you, surgical procedures can be quite traumatic. Not only is the patient concerned about the actual procedure and underlying outcome(s), looking ahead regarding the recovery stage can also be an overwhelming experience in itself.
Dr. Mozen, I appreciate your positive, sincere, and thorough education regarding the surgical procedure, personal contact to follow up with patients after the procedure and continued management of my progress during my recovery stages of these procedures. I would also like to express how your staff (Lana, Annette, Trina, and all ...others) were always professional, helpful and delightful during my visits.
My experience with 'Providence Hospital' overall has been exceptional as one of the assigned customers. The staff located in the 'Outpatient Surgical Center' represents the hospital exceptionally well. Particularly demonstrating patient care 'bed side manners' at maximum level.
Dr. Mozen, I'm extremely enthusiastic about my service you provided and have communicated this to various individuals experiencing similar conditions. Thank you and your 'elite' staff for the 'VIP' patient care.
Sherita
I just wanted to drop a quick note to thank you for all your help regarding the injury to the tendons in my ankle. I appreciate that you immediately fit me into your busy schedule because I was in pain and discomfort. You were able to diagnose the problem when four other doctors including Sport Therapists could not. Also, I thank you for your efforts and follow through with my insurance company so I could get the approval I needed to get an MRI. The quality of care I received and the caring and friendliness of your staff was also greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,Sheri
My name is Lauren and on April 8th of last year, Dr. Mozen performed a bunionectomy on me. Like many of you I was very skeptical and frightened to have this procedure done. Everyone I had spoken with who already had the surgery told me how I would regret ever getting it done. That it would be the most painful thing I would ever have done and my foot would only be worse after. They could not have been more wrong. My surgery could not have gone smoother and I never had one moment of discomfort or pain, and I haven't to this day.
I can not say enough about Dr. Mozen, his staff, or St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac. They all took very good care of me and made my first experience with surgery a very pleasant one. I am scheduled to have my other foot done May 26th and am looking forward to having the same wonderful results.
Sincerely,
Lauren

Dr. Neal Mozen and Dr. Jeffrey Szczepanski and their staff were the most caring and personable people I have ever met. Their attitudes are so comforting I was always confident that my surgical experience was being performed by very capable professionals.
Every visit to their office was more of a family experience rather than a medical experience.
Thank you Dr. Mozen and Dr. Szczepanski And Foot Healthcare Associates

"I had severe chronic foot pain for many years. I had sought out Dr.Szczepanski and Dr. Mozen because of their extensive training and reputation in the surgical community. Dr. Szczepanski explained the surgery in detail, taking time to offer me all my options. I elected to undergo this cutting edge surgery of minimally invasive flatfoot reconstruction. Through three small incisions he was able to reconstruct my foot which had been deformed my whole life. My surgery was flawless. Being a plastic surgeon, I was impressed with the minimal swelling and excellent healing of all my incisions. Having the surgery on a Friday, I was off my foot for the weekend, back doing surgery myself by Monday. Before surgery I had constant pain with walking and especially running. I am now able to walk and run pain free. I am very happy with my surgical outcome. I would highly recommend the procedure and the doctors at Foot Healthcare to others"

The article in the June 25, 2002 "Oakland Press" about the surgery you performed on Huzefa Kapuswala of India touched my heart and I am sure the hearts of everyone who read about the wonderful gift you and Dr. Ariswala gave to that young boy.
I was proud that a physician with offices in the City of Southfield had reached out with such loving concern to a child in need of very special surgery to save his foot from amputation. You made it possible for Huzefa an improved quality of life that he would otherwise been unable to achieve.
Thank you for your example of love and service to others!

I want to take this moment to thank both of you for assisting us at the finish line of the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon. It is good that we can count on you two podiatrists to help the runners who have completed running 26.2 miles. Taking care of their sore and, sometimes, bloody feet insure that they get the medical treatment they need. I thank both of you for taking time out, particularly on a Sunday in helping make our marathon a success. I look forward to working with both of you on next year’s race. Again, thanks for the help on this year’s race. Until I speak with you, take care, enjoy the moment, and the coming holiday season.

On behalf of the “Polish-American’s for Poland,” the St. Nicholas sticker project organized in Warsaw, Poland by Mr. Robert Strybel, and the American Polish Assistance Association in Eastpointe, Michigan, I would like to thank you for your most generous donation for the orphans and less fortunate children of Poland. In the middle of January, after our holiday parcels have been sent and received, we will send you a report of what has been achieved by this year’s project. This will include packages sent to the Polish communities in Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania. May God bless you and those close to your heart during this Holiday Season and into the New Year of 2003.
Dr. Mozen, I want to thank you for taking care of the sore on my little toe. I was actually able to wear dress shoes to my grandson's wedding. It was so nice to be able to wear shoes like a real person again. Thank you so much. (But I won't wear that kind of shoe often.)
